Insurtech Unicorn Alan Enters African Market with Acquisition of Senegal's Tanel

Insurtech Unicorn Alan Enters African Market via Strategic Acquisition

In a landmark move for the global digital healthcare sector, French health insurance and prevention unicorn Alan has completed its acquisition of Dakar-based healthtech startup Tanel. Announced earlier this week, the deal represents Alan’s first expansion onto the African continent and marks a highly anticipated exit for Francophone Africa’s growing healthtech ecosystem.

Previously valued at €5 billion ($5.8 billion) and backed by high-profile figures including global football icon Kylian Mbappé, Alan's acquisition of Tanel builds upon its initial investment in the startup's 2024 seed funding round.

Solving Local Administrative Pain Points

Founded in 2021 by entrepreneurs Mouhamed Ndoye and Makhtar Diop, Tanel was built to solve a major pain point for corporate HR departments across West Africa: navigating fragmented, paper-heavy, and opaque employee health insurance systems.

Key Highlights of Tanel's Network:

  • Membership Base: Covers approximately 70,000 individuals across more than 400 corporate clients in Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire.
  • Provider Network: Connects users directly to over 1,200 pharmacies, clinics, and hospitals.
  • Successful Venture Exit: Provides a strong financial exit for Tanel's early-stage institutional backers, including Ventures Platform and AAIC Investment, alongside several prominent angel investors.

The Strategic Vision: Scaling Digital Healthcare

While the West African health insurance market—currently estimated at nearly €600 million—is small compared to Europe, it is expanding at approximately 10% annually. Traditional insurance coverage remains limited across the region, leaving a significant infrastructure gap that digital-first platforms are uniquely positioned to fill.

Targeting 1 Million Members by 2030

With the finalization of this buyout, the joint entity has established an ambitious target of reaching over one million African members by 2030. The strategy centers on:

  1. Operations and Leadership Continuity: Co-founders Mouhamed Ndoye and Makhtar Diop will continue to lead regional operations, reporting directly to Alan's leadership.
  2. Technological Integration: Integrating Alan's core digital platform, telehealth offerings, and advanced reinsurance mechanisms into Tanel's current structure.
  3. Services Expansion: Upgrading the patient experience with personalized, proactive healthcare tools and preventive support.

Regional Sequencing

According to company statements, the immediate focus is to deepen market penetration in Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire. Thanks to shared regulatory frameworks and a unified currency zone, Francophone West Africa provides an ideal launchpad. Once established, Alan plans to expand its digital healthcare footprint into larger Anglophone hubs, specifically naming Nigeria and Kenya as future targets.
